Content Type Publishing: No content types have been subscribed

Content type publishing is a great new feature in SharePoint 2010. I was setting up a POC and was having issues getting the subscriber sites to pick up the published content types.

Here are some key things to check:

  • Ensure that you have created a content type hub site that has the Content Type Syndication Hub site collection feature enabled

  • Check that your content type(s) that you have created on the hub site are marked as published
    • On the content type screen, click the
Manage publishing for this content type link
    • Select the Publish radio button, then click the OK button (if the content type is already published, the Publish option will be disabled and a last published date will be visible at the bottom of the screen.

  • Check that the Managed Metadata Service Application has the URL for the content type hub specified in the properties screen

Here is the part that I missed:

  • Ensure that the Managed Metadata Service Application Connection has the “Consumes content types from the Content Type Gallery at <UrlOfHubSite>” box checked

Once all of those things are checked and enabled, run the following timer jobs:

  • Content Type Hub
  • Content Type Subscriber (there is one for each web application)

You can check for errors on the content hub site:

  • Site Actions -> Site Settings -> Site Collection Administration -> Content type service application error log

Awesome! The last part ‘Consumes content types from the Content Type Gallery at ContentTypeHubURL’ was the culprit. Once i checked that checkbox, it worked.

    Thanks a ton!
